Welcome to The Gyrocopter Experience - Salisbury

Introduction

Steve BoxallGyroplanes, Autogyros, Gyrocopters or just plain Gyros - call them what you will, they are all the same fantastic flying machines!

Whether you are looking for a trial flight so that you can find out more about these amazing aircraft and experience the famous "Gyro Grin", or you want to learn how to fly one of these machines for yourself, The Gyrocopter Experience Salisbury is the place for you.

We are based at Old Sarum Airfield near Salisbury, and offer Trial Flights, Flight Training for the PPL(G) and advanced training.

If you decide to take the plunge and buy your own aircraft we have hangarage and maintenance available on-site, as well as a Cafe / Bar, Pilots Briefing facilities and a fantastic atmosphere.

Air Experience Flights

Fascinated by gyroplanes?  Always wanted to give it a go?  Seen James Bond flying Little Nellie and thought "I've got to have a go at that"?  Thinking of learning to fly a gyro but want to see what it's like first?  Just want to try something completely different?

Experience

No matter what your motivation, if you want to try a gyro flight then a Gyrocopter Experience trial flight is the place to start.

When you come for a trial flight with The Gyrocopter Experience - Salisbury:

- you will receive a briefing beforehand about the flight

- you will get the opportunity to handle the controls yourself

- we will fly a number of manoeuvers, typically covering fast flight, slow flight, hovering, vertical descents, tight turns, take-off and landing (with a bit of normal "just flying around" too!) to show you the capabilities of a gyro - or if you want we can just go sightseeing

- we will tailor the content of the flight to suit you and do the things you want to do

- we will supply all the specialist equipment you need - helmet, headset, flying suit and gloves.  You just need to turn up in appropriate clothing (jeans, trainers and a fleece or two depending on the weather) but don 't forget to bring a big grin to use at the end of the flight!

All flights are subject to suitable weather conditions.  We don't often have to cancel, but recommend that you call before setting off to check.  Your friends and family will be welcome at the airfield - we have ample parking, a cafe serving hot food and drinks 7 days a week.

We don't put all of our available timeslots on the website, so if you want to book an experience flight just call Instructor Steve Boxall on 0790 505 9789 to arrange a date.

For more information check out the "downloads" page on our website www.gyrotraining.co.uk

If you would like to buy someone a gift of a flight, buying a Gyrocopter Experience Giftpack with flight voucher is the easiest way to proceed. The person receiving the gift can then book a specific time and date at a later stage. If you already have a voucher and would like to book a time and a date Redeem your voucher here

Alternatively if you want to book a date and time now then you can Book Direct Here. Go on...treat yourself...you wont regret it!

Gyrocopter Pilot Training

Training

Everyone is different and each of us learns in a different way - which is why we take care to find out about you and tailor your training course to your own needs and learning style.   Every lesson starts with a pre-flight briefing which covers everything from radio calls and airmanship to the manouevers we will be undertaking and their aerodynamic effects on the aircraft.  At the end there's a debrief where we talk about what went well and what needs more work.

At the Gyrocopter Experience Salisbury we offer both intensive courses running on weekdays or tailor-made training packages fitted around your availability.  Some people prefer to train just one day a week, at the Gyrocopter Experience Salisbury we are flexible in our approach to our training schedule - just ask!

Meet the Staff

Steve is the chief Gyro instructor at Old Sarum and has been a Flying Instructor for over 20 years.   He has been flying Gyros for over a decade and started his gyroing adventures in a single seat gyro which he built himself in his garage.  Steve is also the proud owner of the very first MT-03 to be sold in the UK and helped to get the machines certified in this country.

In the past Steve was a commercial balloon pilot and so has excellent knowledge of aviation, now he flies something which travels significantly faster!  Steve's son and daughter first flew in a gyro when they were aged 5 and 7, and his daughter made her first landing aged 8. Now she thinks that flying gyros is easy, and wants to know when she have a pink gyro of her own!  The arrival of our Magni M16 has caused great excitement in the Boxall household, as the kids have worked out that it has adjustable rudder pedals so they'll be able to learn how to fly sooner .....

Steve is well know for his good looks, charm, wit and, above all, his modesty.

Facilities

Old Sarum Airfield has good facilities making it welcoming for those accompanying a student pilot, as well as the trainee pilot themselves.  It is one of the classic British airfields, with a history going back to the First World War.  There's usually plenty going on at Old Sarum, and there are few things that can beat sitting outside the cafe on a fine day watching what's happening at the airfield.  Other activities at Old Sarum include fixed-wing training, microlights and parachuting.

The airfield has a 780m grass runway and is CAA licenced.  An air-to-ground radio service is provided so you can practice your radio skills as you learn to fly.  If you wish to bring your own gyro to Old Sarum then we have hangarage, fuel and maintenance available.

We have a briefing area with PC and WiFi internet access for flight planning or just relaxing.

There is a selection of excellent B&Bs in the area.

Where are we?

The airfield is located just off the A345 Salisbury to Amesbury road.  Our postcode is SP4 6DZ.

Turn off the A345 at the Portway roundabout.  Drive along the portway until you reach the traffic lights - turn right here to take you on to the airfield.  At the T-junction turn left, then follow the road along to the end and turn right.  The car park is at the end of the road on the left hand side.

Our Training Aircraft

The Gyrocopter Experience Salisbury is delighted to announce that we have recently taken delivery of a brand new Magni M16C tandem 2-seat gyro.  To describe the aircraft as "fantastic" would be a bit of an understatement - and it is proving to be a huge hit with our students.  We are the first and only school in the UK to offer training on our own Magni gyroplane.

Not to be outdone, we also have our own MT-03 gyroplane available for training too.  Our MT has starred in a number of magazine articles and reviews over the past few years and so is no shrinking violet.  G-CDZZ has safely taken many students from their first gyro flight through to the coveted PPL(G).

The MT and the Magni are both great machines - one of the unique opportunities we offer at the Gyrocopter Experioence Salisbury is the ability to fly both aircraft and make your own decision as to which one you prefer.

If you have your own gyroplane from another manufacturer we can teach you to fly that too - as long as it is a UK approved factory-built machine.
