What's special about us?

Gyroplanes, Autogyros, Gyrocopters or just plain Gyros - call them what you will, they are all the same fantastic flying machines!

Whether you are looking for a trial flight so that you can find out more about these amazing aircraft and experience the famous "Gyro Grin", or you want to learn how to fly one of these machines for yourself, The Gyrocopter Experience Salisbury is the place for you.

We are based at Old Sarum Airfield near Salisbury, and offer Trial Flights, Flight Training for the PPL(G) and advanced training.

If you decide to take the plunge and buy your own aircraft we have hangarage and maintenance available on-site, as well as a Cafe / Bar, Pilots Briefing facilities and a fantastic atmosphere.

Introductory Flights

Ever since mankind first raised its eyes towards the silver screen and saw James Bond strap himself in to Little Nellie all men have thought "I've  just GOT to have a go at that!"

Now, thanks to the Gyrocopter Experience you can turn those dreams in to reality and experience the unique thrill of gyro flight.  OK, so way may not have the machine guns and rocket launchers attached to our aircraft, but the thrill of flight in these amazing machines more than makes up for that!

From our base at Old Sarum we have an amazing ancient landscape to explore - as well as the tourist hotspot of Stonehenge there are countless barrows, hill forts and and ancient earthworks to see.  In the summer months we can check out the crop circles (how do they make them?), and if you are an aviation enthusiast then the comings and goings from Boscombe Down and Middle Wallop provide varied and interesting aviation activity.

When you come for a trial flight you will be provided with all the specialist equipment you need - a flying suit, a helmet and headset and a pair of gloves.  The only thing you need to bring is yourself and your sense of adventure!

When you come for a trial flight with The Gyrocopter Experience - Salisbury:

  • you will receive a briefing beforehand about the flight
  • you will get the opportunity to handle the controls yourself
  • we will fly a number of manoeuvers, typically covering fast flight, slow flight, hovering, vertical descents, tight turns, take-off and landing (with a bit of normal "just flying around" too!) to show you the capabilities of a gyro
  • or if you want we can just go sightseeing
  • we will tailor the content of the flight to suit you and do the things you want to do

All flights are subject to suitable weather conditions.  We don't often have to cancel, but recommend that you call before setting off to check.  Your friends and family will be welcome at the airfield - we have ample parking, a cafe serving hot food and drinks 7 days a week.

We don't put all of our available timeslots on the website, so if you want to book an experience flight just call Instructor Steve Boxall on 0790 505 9789 to arrange a date.

Gyrocopter Pilot Training

Our superb facilities at Old Sarum are an ideal location for our intensive courses, run over 4 or 5 days, which get your training off to a flying start.  Our courses cater for those who wish to train for their PPL(G) as well as for more experienced gyro pilots who want to extend their skills on one of our advanced flying courses or prepare for their flying instructor training.

When you attend one of our intensive courses you will fly for around two and a half hours each day - which may not sound like much but learning to fly is an intense and demanding experience and you will need time between lessons to relax and assimilate what you have learned.

We understand that your time is valuable to you, which is whey we have multiple training machines available here to minimise the risk of being unable to fly due to mechanical problems.  We also have a variety of machines available for you to try - from the good old MT-03 powered by a 100hp Rotax 912s through to our flagship Magni M16 powered by the turbocharged 115hp Rotax 914.

If you wish to undertake your training on a less intensive basis we can accomodate that too - we've had great feedback from all of the training which we do, and you will be learning with one of the UK's most experienced gyro instructors.

Our students have come from all walks of life - we have trained everyone from hairdressers to airline pilots, from 7-year olds (OK, I haven't quite finished teaching the kids how to fly just yet ...) to pensioners - they all love the experience of flight and, more importantly, have enjoyed the journey they have taken to master these amazing machines.
