Fly around the stunning Yorkshire countryside in a Gyrocopter. The Gyrocopter Experience York is a full time Gyrocopter Flying School based on the outskirts of the beautiful city of York, next to the village of Rufforth offering Introductory Flights, Pilot Training, Pilot Development Course and Instructor Training Courses. The school is normally open to the public six days a week (Monday to Saturday) and everyone is welcome to come and see the Gyrocopters and have a chat. As well as about 15 modern Gyrocopters, we also have a Gyrocopter Museum, a Gyrocopter Cinema, a Gyrocopter Simulator and a Gyrocopter Shop.

Your first flight in a Gyrocopter

All our Introductory Lessons and Experience Flights are usually flown on a Saturday, when the "Gyroport" becomes a hive of activity. If you are coming for a flight - bring as many friends and family as you want - everyone is welcome. Flights must be pre-booked to ensure we have the correct aircraft and instructors available.

Train to be a Gyrocopter Pilot

Gyrocopter Pilot Training is normally offered as intensive 5 day courses, Monday through Friday. Typically we have two students per instructor and up to three instructors working at one time.

Train to be a Gyrocopter Instructor

The Gyrocopter Instructor Academy, run by Senior Examiner Phil Harwood, is also based at York, where more than 60% of all the instructors training in the UK did their instructor training.

It's Head Office of The Gyrocopter Experience

The Gyrocopter Experience Head Office is also contained within the premises run by our boss, Kati.

Introductory Flights

Our Introductory flights are really cool. We offer three different lengths of flight. What we do in that flight depends upon how much previous experience you have at flying. The majority of our introductory flights take place on a Saturday.

The York Experience Flight

This is our most popular flight. It starts with a tour of our museum and showroom, you can bring all your family and friends along (free of charge!). There will be up to 4 flyers on the event, and very quickly you will all get to know each other. We will provide a safety briefing, an understanding of how a Gyrocopter works and then each person with a pre-booked flight will spend around 30 minutes flying around York, hands on the controls - or off the control, the choice is yours! Buy.

The York Extended Flight

This is ideally suited to people who already fly some other type of aircraft and who want to understand more about the unique characteristics of a Gyrocopter. This is a one to one experience which includes a more detailed understanding of the controls. It is generally more "hands on" than "hands off" the controls.

The Extended Flight is also good for people who want to enjoy the view but want to fly further than the local area, perhaps you want to fly close to your house! Come on down! The flight lasts about about an hour. Buy.

The Ultimate York Gyrocopter Flight

This just has to be the best flight that you can have at York. It lasts around 90 minutes and it generally has a theme:

  • There is enough time to fly to Scarborough and fly along the coast...simply wonderful.
  • Perhaps you want to fly over the moors and over the reservoirs thinking that you are one of the dambuster pilot's...we are never to old to playact!
  • or perhaps you want to visit the humber bridge, or just do some really extensive training to really get to understand the wonders of the Gyro

Whatever you want to do, I am sure that you will never forget the York Gyrocopter Ultimate flight. Buy.

How it works!

If you would like to buy someone a gift of a flight, buying a Gyrocopter Experience Giftpack with flight voucher is the easiest way to proceed. The person receiving the gift can then book a specific time and date at a later stage. If you already have a voucher and would like to book a time and a date Redeem your voucher here

Alternatively if you want to book a date and time now then you can Book Direct Here. Go on...treat wont regret it!

Gyrocopter Pilot Training

The Gyrocopter Experience - York does ALL it's pilot training as intensive courses. Each course will last 4 or 5 days and generally there are two students per instructor. This means that you will aim to fly 2-3 hours per day or 10-12 hours per week. Believe us, it is enough concentration for anyone.

Having a "buddy" on an intensive course has a number of advantages, not least, you have someone to share your excitement, frustration, exhiliration, and even more frustration as you progress through the course. There will be times when you know what you need to do, but you just cannot get your hands and feet to do it! Also, when you do something right - you have someone to tell; equally when you do something wrong, like a bouncy landing, you have someone to take the micky out of you!

It's a holiday!

One of our students once told us that "actually we supply activity holidays". What a cool thing to say. It's true, think of your training time here as part of your annual holiday, what a great way to spend your leisure time.

But there's more to learning than just flying!

As well as learning to control the aircraft you also need to learn some of the theory that goes along with it. We do that too. It's not scarey and we will help you through it.

Book your whole course

If you are new to flying, you will need about 6 courses. If you already have a licence then you are likely to require about 4 courses. We are very busy and generally booked up months in advance. You are advised to book your entire schedule early, even if you want to book just 2 weeks per year for the next 3 years. That way you will complete your course and join the merry gang of Gyronauts.
